- Use the pictures to tell the stories
- Handle books correctly, knowing to read from front to back and left to right
- Recognise letters by sound and letter name
- Hear initial sounds in words (e.g- cat begins with the letter 'c')
- Start to recognise tricky words
- Understand that pictures and words relate to each other.
Children love to reread their favourite books and this should be encouraged. The children will start using their memory, joining in and soon they will feel confident to "read" these familiar books independently.
Adults taking time to read to a child is a rich and rewarding experience; not only to the literacy skills of the child improve but their confidence increases and the relationship with the adult and child becomes stronger.
