“Without mathematics, there’s nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Everything around you is numbers.” – Shakuntala Devi
At St Patrick's, our aim is to set a strong mathematical foundation for the children in Early Years and encourage mathematical thinking. Our highly skilled practitioners allow opportunities for the children to learn mathematics through both child-initiated play and direct adult teaching. We support our children to be creative, critical thinkers and problem solvers. We support the learning of mathematics in the Early Years by ensuring our provision and practice is informed by the reflections on how our children learn.
In St Patrick's, we follow the structure of 'White Rose Maths' which provides opportunities for the children to engage in a range of mathematical learning over time. White Rose embeds mathematical talk and provides a variety of opportunities to develop the understanding of number, shape, measure and spatial thinking.
Mastering Number
Across Early Years and KS1 we follow the Mastering Number Programme delivered by NCETM (Maths Hub). The main aims of Mastering Number is to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children beginning in Reception through to Year 2 and ensuring children leave KS1 with fluency and confidence in calculation. The overview of the Mastering Number Programme is detailed below.
