St. Patrick's Catholic Primary School

Together we are growing in God's love

“We must teach our children to smell the earth, to taste the rain, to touch the wind, to see things grow, to hear the sunrise and nightfall, to care." - John Cleal

The Need for Outdoor Learning

Forest School is a philosophy and a way of working with people in an outdoor environment. It’s a methodology and an ethos that:

  •  Promotes self-esteem, creativity, confidence and independence.
  •  Is a series of long-term sessions that build on the needs and development of the child. It is not one-off days in the woods.
  • Enables supported risk-taking, child-centred learning, exploration and play.
  • Promotes team-building and collaboration skills.

Forest School is an approach that will bring a different, special aspect to our children's learning experience. Spending time in nature can promote healthy attitudes towards sustainability and our forest school can foster this connection. Forest School is great for developing physical motor skills, self-confidence and an emotional awareness in the natural world. The activities in the forest can also be applied to the national curriculum, whether it’s understanding the properties of shapes, doing science practicals at the fire pit, or learning the meaning of words through woodland stories. The outdoors is in fact the perfect place to see how concepts learnt in the classroom can be applied to the outdoors.

Please see the document below to find out how you can help us create a forest school that will benefit all of our children and community.
