Children need to...

  • Listen to and join in with rhymes and songs

  • Join in with familiar stories

  • Handle books correctly and enjoy looking at pictures

Whilst sharing a book with your child...

  • Discuss the front cover- what do you think the book is about?

  • Use words such as - front cover, back cover, beginning, end, author...

  • Encourage your child to join in when reading familiar or repetitive stories

  • Talk about the pictures - asking open ended questions

You can also help by...

  • Going to your local library with your child

  • Sing nursery rhymes with your child

  • Look at the print around you- food labels, road signs, car registrations...

  • Write and read shopping lists to your child

Starting to read...

Children need to...

  • Use the pictures to tell the stories
  • Handle books correctly, knowing to read from front to back and left to right
  • Recognise letters by sound and letter name
  • Hear initial sounds in words (e.g- cat begins with the letter 'c')
  • Start to recognise tricky words
  • Understand that pictures and words relate to each other.

Children love to reread their favourite books and this should be encouraged. The children will start using their memory, joining in and soon they will feel confident to "read" these familiar books independently.

Adults taking time to read to a child is a rich and rewarding experience; not only to the literacy skills of the child improve but their confidence increases and the relationship with the adult and child becomes stronger.

Once children can read...

Children need too...

  • Practise their phonics knowledge daily (see 'Phonics' page)
  • Read Daily
