September 2023
What a fabulous start we have had to the year. We have been very busy getting used to how Year 1 works, and the high expectations! Here are some of the things that we have been up to;
- Reading Ruby's Worry and retelling the story
- Lots of counting in maths, finding more than and less than a given number, counting on from any number and counting backwards.
- Learning about our class Saint in RE, Saint Elizabeth
- Participating in gymnastics with Mrs Harper and showing her how flexible we are!
- Looking at different body parts in science
- Labelling glockenspiels and listening to music
- Looking at technology around us in computing and what it is used for
September 2023
A very big welcome to our new Year Ones!
Week beginning 22nd May
Our last week of this half term! We have had a lovely week and spent lots of time learning in the sunshine. We have;
- Used the cress we have grown in science to use in our chicken salad that we designed and made in DT
- Made bird feeders in our geography lesson when learning about how we can help animals in their habitats
- Learned about Pentecost and the importance of it today in RE
- Planted our sunflowers outside
- Answered questions about the 'Egg box dragon' story using full sentences
Week beginning 15th May
This we we have;
- Been to church to celebrate Ascension
- Finding quarters of shapes and quantities in maths
- Drawn and painted our superheroes in art
- Made story predictions and character predictions for the story 'The eggbox dragon.'
- Spent some time on the computers consolidating our addition and subtraction skills
- Had our Kidsafe session with Miss McDowell
- Played football in PE
- Enjoyed crackers and jam in snack
- Created a map of Cleator Moor and made our own key
Week beginning 8th May
Another short week, but lots of great learning going on!
This week we have been;
- Enjoying ham wraps , biscuits and yoghurts in snack
- learning how to sketch people- making sure body parts are in the correct place
- Finding halves of shapes and quantities
- Orally re-telling and acting out traditional tales
- Looking at what makes Cleator Moor special to us
- Planting our sunflowers so we can observe what happens over time
- Enjoying our reading sessions in the morning
Week beginning 1st May
A short week, but a lot of learning achieved! This week we have been;
- Making our own biscuits in snack
- Enjoying biscuits and cereal in snack
- Making arrays in maths- some found this difficult but we persevered !
- Learning about the structure of traditional tales and reading some that we are un familiar with, including; The Magic Porridge Pot and Rumpelstiltskin.
- Understanding what happened on the Road to Emmaus and why this is important
- Enjoying some time in the provision areas once all independent tasks have been completed
- Looking at the artist Roy Lichenstein and investigating colour, tone, shape and lines

This week we have been;
- Getting Cornation ready in class by making our own crowns
- Reading the Kings Pants and designing our own
- Starting our Kidsafe sessions with Miss McDowell
- Celebrting the Coronation wearing white, blue and red, and participating in party games!
- Planting cress seeds in science and seeing what plants need in order to survive
- Re-telling the story of the clock tower using lots of adjectives
- Learning about the oceans and where they are
Week beginning 27th March
Nearly time for the Easter holidays!
This week we have been;
- Writing our own stories- enjoy reading some of them, look at the fabulous spelling and handwriting!
- Making Easter cards and baking chocolate cakes
- Learning about capacity and volume in maths
- In geography, we have been learning about the UK and famous landmarks
- Finishing off our seaside collages in art and evaluating them
- Enjoying a DT online workshop looking at mechanisms and levers
Week beginning 20th March
A very busy week in year 1 with some super work and learning stars!
We have been;
- Enjoying crumpets, toast and beans in snack time
- Completing our weather investigations and researching countries that we would like to live in!
- Learning about Palm Sunday and how Jesus was treated by some of the people in the temple
- Acting out what happened in the Last Supper
- In maths we have been learning about height, length and weight and we can now use rulers to measure with
- Describing settings in English, using some fabulous vocabulary!
Week beginning 6th March
Hello Spring! We have certainly enjoyed some sunny ( but cold) playtimes outside this week! We have had another busy week in Year 1 and some brilliant work produced!
- We have munched on spaghetti bolognaise in snack
- Retold the story of Lost and Found- by working independently and focusing on our handwriting
- Continued with numbers to 50- looking at estimating on a numberline, partitioning tens and ones and finding more and less than a given number.
- Enjoyed carrying out our science experiment- Which material will keep Ted dry?
- Writing questions that we wonder about Jesus' childhood
- Comparing the UK to Kenya in Geography and stating where we would prefer to live!
Week beginning 27th February
- This week we said goodbye to Miss Woolaghan! We had a little party for her and made her some gifts. She will pop in and see us soon!
- Cleator Moor brass band visited school, and we lots of fun listening to the different instruments and learning about the parts of them. Some of us even got to have a go with some of them!
- We have been learning to count in tens and ones and we are getting better at this
- Celebrating world book day
- learning to draw the character Isobel from The Invisible

We have been working super hard in Year One!
- We have been completing phonic screening tests
- Checking on our tricky words progress
- Making links in RE
- Started to look at numbers to 50 and beginning to partition larger numbers
- learning about doubles and near doubles in maths
- Writing recounts
- Planning science experiments
- Busy making valentine's cards for the people that we love
- Raising awareness of mental health and having a spa day
Week beginning 23rd January
This week we have been;
- Designing and making boats in the workshop provision. We are going to use these to see which materials float and sink in science.
- Munching on toast and cereal in the snack area
- Doing lots of shared writing so we know what makes a really good piece of story writing
- learning what Jesus was like as a boy, and what happened at the temple with Simeon and Anna
- Comparing numbers to 20 using symbols
- Having lots of fun on science day, learning about and writing about Charles Macintosh
Week beginning 16th January
This week we have been;
- Munching on cheese wraps, cereal, birthday cake, crackers and yoghurts.
- Making floral crowns to honour Mary
- Writing the story of Lila and the secret of rain
- Finding more than and less than a given number
- Exploring the properties of materials in science
- Working hard on our independent learning in the provision
- Learning about pulse and symbol in music and learning the accompanying symbols
- Learning about the continents and a very catchy song to help us remember them!

Spring 1 2023

-having lots of fun in our Halloween themed provision!

- munching on pumpkin oranges, vampire teeth and pumpkin crispy cakes
- writing our own Halloween potions and using LOTS of adjectives
- designing and creating our own spooky houses in the construction provision

- spending time in the provision which has been about Autumn
