Making learning irresistible

Home Learning

Hello my lovely little receptions! I miss you guys so much already! We might not all be together causing the usual madness in our classroom but we can still have lots of fun learning from home until we are reunited again! I'll be putting lots of things on this page to keep you busy and entertained, such as funny pics to make you laugh, ideas of things you can do with your family and share silly stories of what Matilda and I are getting up too! Love Mrs Patrick xxxxxx

Mrs Patrick and Mrs Hartley

LearningBook

Lots of you access 'LearningBook' weekly to see the things your child has been doing at school, along with uploading photos and making comments regularly to their observations. Below are some instructions on how to download the app and upload photos from home if you haven't been uploading already. Please can you upload photos as often as you can of the things they are doing at home. These can be linked to the things i suggest as well as your ideas, this way i can keep track of their learning and see how they are. THANK YOU, love Mrs Patrick xxxxxxxx

Friday 17th July

Good morning my LOVELY LOVELY LOVELY receptions! I CAN NOT believe this is our last day together (virtually) i feel a little emotional (you know what i'm like!) but i'm also happy and SOOOOOOOOOOOOO proud of you all! You have all worked hard and stayed happy during a really hard time! You adults need the biggest well done and thank you! You have all managed to juggle work, being a parent and taking on a new profession as a teacher! You have risen to the challenge and that support has made my job easier! If you did home school everyday, some days, once a week or when you could fit it in then you should be VERY PROUD, don't look back on this time and feel guilty, you all did your best! You've seen my daily struggles on here about working from home and trying to teach Matilda and i'm a teacher!

I know you are going to have a fantastic time with Miss Cooper she is a brilliant teacher (I mentored her when she first started at St Pat's so i know she's fab!) and you will all continue to work hard and have fun. She is going to make your new classroom very play based, so there will be lots of opportunities to 'Play to Learn'. I can't wait to come see you all in September and hear about your summer holidays.

It was so lovely to see some of you today when i called by at your houses to give you some sweets, sorry to those that weren't in but i hope you got your sweets at least!

Take care my little cherubs, love you all lots, kisses and hugs, Mrs Patrick xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Good morning my lovely little cherubs! How was your weekend? Matilda and i  had a great weekend enjoying the weather! We went strawberry picking, walked around Cogra Moss, went to Muffin Break and did some DIY in the house! Productive weekend!

Can you believe this is your last week in my class!!! I can't believe it, i'm very proud of everyone and i hope you are proud of yourselves! School reports have been sent out to those at home and i will call those I've not spoken to yet this week too.

The last week of school is usually filled with a range of different activities and events with a little 'formal' learning mixed in! Despite most of us not being at school i wanted to feel as much like we are, so we are going to keep it simple this week and do the following activities everyday!

  • Reading - Oxford Owl
  • Phonics - Daily Digraph
  • Maths - Numeral Formation Practise
  • Afternoon Activity - Choose from sheet below

I will post a message everyday and the phonics daily digraph but all other activities will be the same so remember to practise/do them.

In reception we use our learning superhero powers all the time, especially 'Tough Tortoise'  who is always 'resilient' and never gives up when things are tough! We can't get everything right all of the time and it is important to learn from this and improve.

There are a couple of videos for you to watch and some follow up activities for you to choose from, see the file list below to download the document.

The saints are remembered on their individual feast days with special mention, prayers, and possibly a scripture reading. The links below are to video one about each saint, If you have a printer you could colour in St Paul and St Peter and write a short sentence too, you can draw them and write a sentence into your 'Home Learning' book also. Below is also a short power point with a reading and prayer on that you might like to read to your child too.

Maths:

For the next few weeks i want us to revise the teen numbers, focusing on one teen number per day. I want us to look at the properties of the number, how many tens and ones it has, how many ways it can be made etc.

Today's number is 11

Like the picture above can you write into your 'Home Learning' book how many tens and ones are in 11?

I have attached a sheet below all about number 11 for you to print or do into your 'Home Learning' book and then in your book i also want you to see how many ways you can make 11 using the part part whole model we have used before (like picture below). So for example 11 can be made of 8 and 3, you would put 11 into the whole and the 8 and the 3 into the part. You could also draw 3 parts if you wanted to make it tricker!

Part + Part = Whole; number bonds and simple addition work mats; laminate and use with dry erase markers

Other Activity:

And after all that if you still have some energy i would like you to draw/paint a portrait of someone special to you. Following of from today's feast day where we have thought about two Saint that are important to us in our Catholic faith, i want you to think about someone who is important to you and why. Then paint a picture of them, maybe you could give it to them as a present to show how much they mean to you!

Thursday 25th June

Hello my lovelies, well it was a hot day yesterday! Good job I remembered to put my sun cream on! It was nice to wave at some of you over the fence yesterday, I felt like a celebrity, you were all that excited to see me! To all of you lovely lot working from home a big hug from me, I'm missing you lots. Matilda had a fab day with her Grandma and even went to a sports chance camp in Cockermouth that she really enjoyed! I'm in school today and we will be doing exactly the activities below, so give them a go at home if you can. Love Mrs Patrick xxx

Today's Activities

Literacy:

I want you to watch the video below about Jesus and Matthew.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgy6TWuUkK0

Then with an adult discuss what happened in it. Why did God chose Matthew? What made Matthew a good person? Did he believe and follow in God? Why? Did he continue to spread the word of God? How/why? I want you to write a few sentences about your thoughts/opinions/ideas into your 'Home Learning' book.

Phonics:

We are going to revisit or learn (for some children) all the digraphs from phase 3 Monday - Thursday. Children often know these by sight and usually use them in their reading but without adult support don't use them correctly in their writing. If your child knows these this will be a good opportunity for you to let them do it independently so they can practise their phonics skills. It is VITAL that they have a secure knowledge at recognising  reading and writing them independently to progress further in their phonics.

Today's digraph is......

Watch the video below and then do the activity sheet, if you don't have a printer don't worry just do the writing in your 'Home Learning' book and read the words off the sheet on the screen.

ng words: king, ring, wing, sing, song, swing, sting, bring.

Maths:

Today I want you to consolidate all the work from this week on less and more. I have attached the files below as always just write them into your books if you don't have a printer (adults don't feel you need to draw the lorries and robots, the numbers will be enough!) and as an extension try and make one of these below and use it on your 100 square to find 1 less/more and 10 less/more.

1 and 10 more and less using a 100 square

Other Activity:

From the video of Jesus and Matthew you will have learnt that both Jesus and his disciples had to be good listeners. In reception we can sometimes struggle to be good listeners so today i want you to make some listening ears to help you be a better listener. Maybe you could go on a listening walk and listen to all the things round you that you normally don't notice, such a birds, the wind and trees etc. Have fun!

Literacy:

Today i want you to write a story based on your story map yesterday, this is how we build up to writing a story in school, so you can ALL DO THIS :) and i can't wait to read them! Remember the story is based on Idris’ next adventure! Please remember all the things you should put in your writing some exciting words, finger spaces, capital letters , full stops and neat handwriting! This is a writing competition so once you have finished it, please asks your adult to take a photograph of it and send to: homelearning@st-patricks-cleatormoor.cumbria.sch.uk by FRIDAY, 19thJUNE.

Other Activity:

There is a strong link between being physically active and improving our well-being. One of Idris’ promises included dancing which is the ultimate feel good exercise! So have a go at some of these dance classes or make up your own routines and enjoy it!

Maths:

Today i want you to make a symmetrical piece of art like the one below, this will require your cutting skills and some problem solving too (it took me awhile! instructions below with my attempt!) Have fun, please send me some photos on 'Learningbook' so i can see your designs. Mrs Patrick xxxx

Hands-On Math: Positive-Negative Symmetry Art!

1st: Fold a piece of paper (if you don't have coloured paper just colour one sheet in with a crayon) and cut out your design.

2nd: Unfold and cut your piece of paper in half down the line of symmetry, remember to keep the bits you cut out too because you will need them.

3rd: Stick the 'negative' on one half and the 'positive' on the other half.

WELL DONE XXX

I want you to read the story again of Idris and his wisp and then think about what would happen to Idris in the next book for example, will he go travelling on a boat? Will he meet a new friend? Discuss this with someone at home. What happens is entirely up to you but make it exciting for your reader! Today i want you to draw a story map of what will happen to Idris in the next book. Please use pictures and words and complete in your 'home-learning' book. We use story ALL THE TIME in reception, so you will all be fantastic at this! I have put some story map examples below to give you ideas of how you could do it.

Idris’ Wisp didn’t give him a memory it gave him a promise of something to come. He could see what that promise would look like in the future and this gave him hope.Think about what your promise from the Wisp would look like. What are you most looking forward to after lockdown ends? Where will you go? Who will you see? What will you do? Visualisation just means picturing what this will look like in your head. Try to think of every little detail and use all of your senses. What can you see, hear, smell, feel and taste? When you have your visualisation really clear in your head, take some deep breaths and just relax, thinking about what this will be like. This is a good example of how to use your visualisation https://youtu.be/vlv6Y1tq1sQ

Maths:
Today i want you to think about shapes that are symmetrical and not symmetrical - asymmetric. Can you group things into the 2 groups of symmetrical and asymmetric. You could maybe make a chart like below.I have also added a sheet version if you have a printer.
Learning about butterflies lends itself nicely to teaching symmetry! Watch this video to see how to do an easy butterfly symmetry lesson and craft.
Can you cut of some shapes, circle, square, triangle etc and fold them to see if they are symmetrical or not, how many lines of symmetry do they have?

“Hope is the belief that circumstances will get better. It’s not a wish for things
to get better, it’s a belief that they will.”

Although circumstances aren’t at the moment how we would like them to be, we can all hold on to our hope and the knowledge that after every storm comes a rainbow.

Being Thankful and Generous

Idris’ circumstances in the story were much harder than ours currently are. As a refugee, living in a camp after fleeing his home, he didn’t have any of the comforts we are used to. This can remind us how fortunate we are, even in our present situation.

As we concentrate on looking after our well-being, maybe keeping a journal every day and just write down something you are grateful for each day, your adult could do this for you or you could do it as a family. It will help you to appreciate all of the little things.

Another way in which we can improve our own well-being is actually by doing things for others. Giving is proven to boost your mood so doing a little something for someone you love will make you both feel good!

You could also record these little acts of kindness and generosity in your journal to look back
on to give you a little boost.

Literacy:

Today i want you to read the book again with an adult, see if there are words you could read too! Then think about what the story is about. Make a list of five key words/ things you thought about when you read it – for example, ‘magic’.

Now look at your key words and think about what the title of the book could be and what the front cover might look like.  Your task is to design a front cover with a title and explain to someone why you designed it in this way. Please put them on 'Learningbook' so i can see them. Thank you xxx

Creativity Through Art:

Things have changed a lot for all of us in the past few months and life as it was sometimes feels a bit like a distant memory. However, like those in the story, we can all use our memories to give us hope for the future. The woman on page 8, recalled a beautiful memory of being in the forest which brought her peace and happiness. Think of a favourite memory of your own. Something that makes you feel real happiness and calm. Now, try to draw or paint that memory. Being creative is a great way to support our well-being and we get a real sense of achievement when we see our final products too.

Maths:

Did you discover many symmetrical things yesterday? Laurence and Quentin sent me there's well done boys(photo above)!

I found the image below and thought it was a great idea, if you want to create your own when you find things that are symmetrical you could put them on your chart!

I want you to watch this video https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/ztpyr82 about symmetry  and then get creative, can you make a symmetrical picture, a symmetrical butterfly or even a snow flake! There are some photos of ways in which you could do it below, along with some worksheets if you get time! Have fun!xxx

HAPPY 21ST BIRTHDAY

We hope you have a fantastic day at school and enjoy your little treats, love your Reception family xxxxx

I hope you have had a great weekend in the sun, Matilda and i certainly have! We went biking in Keswick park (because it's flat and Matilda moans if there's a slight incline!!), a BBQ at Grandma's and also visited Great Gram, it's so nice to be able to see more people now even if we still can't hug them!

Tomorrow's daily message will be from one of you, remember to send in your messages to homelearning@st-patricks-cleatormoor.cumbria.co.uk .

Today's Activities

Emergency - Whole School Project - Ludlow Junior School

We are jazzing things up this week and the whole school are going to do work based a the same book! BUT we can't tell you the name of the book yet! Our Literacy lessons will be based on a new book and in the afternoons, we are going to focus on
improving our mental health. There is a theme running through the book and you need to work it out and think about how it links to your life (your adult will help you do this).

There will also be a writing competition at the end of the week – we would like everyone to enter!

There will be a PRIZE for the writing that has the
greatest impact upon Miss Wilkinson and Mrs Pritchard!

“Hope is the belief that circumstances will get better. It’s not a wish for things
to get better, it’s a belief that they will.”

Although circumstances aren’t at the moment how we would like them to be, we can all hold on to our hope and the knowledge that after every storm comes a rainbow.

Literacy

Today i want you to look at the image below and draw it in your 'Home Learning' book. Discuss what you can see with an adult at home. Around the picture, please write down any observations you have about the picture and any questions you might have too.Under your picture, write down a few sentences explaining what you think the story is going to be about – and why you think this. Adults please support them in this and due to this being a whole school activity the length they need to write is obviously based on their phonics ability, so please don't feel they have to write a lot. There is a story writing task later in the week so maybe save their energy (and yours :) ) for then!

Music:

DO NOT READ THE BOOK BELOW UNTIL YOU HAVE DONE THE LITERACY ACTIVITY BELOW!

READ THE BOOK THEN...........................In the story, Idris is experiencing adversity. Where do you think he is? How is he feeling before the Wisp appears? How does the Wisp change people? Why is this?

On page 6 of the story, the Wisp brought back this memory for the old man and joy to those around him.
Making and listening to music has a positive effect on our mood helping us to relax. However you are feeling today, think about the type of songs and music that would suit you. Then turn off your devices and have a go at just listening to the music that suits your mood. Dance around your bedroom. Whatever makes you feel good!

You could also think about the hopeful song you think the people in the story could hear and could
even have a go at making your own music. I personally think it might be ‘Here comes the Sun’ by The
Beatles but we would love to hear your suggestions on Facebook.Listen to some hopeful music and then try and create some, we are always making music on our outdoor stage using pots, pans and musical instruments, so you can definitely get creative at home!

This is the book we will be focusing on this week.

(Please don't read it until you have completed today's literacy prediction activity)

Maths:

This week we are going to look at symmetry! What do you think the word symmetry means? Can something be symmetrical? Yes it can! When something is symmetrical it is exactly the same/identical on each side! Can you think of something that is symmetrical? Look at the powerpoint below to learn more about symmetry. Today's activity is below the powerpoint. Have a great day xxxxxxxxx

I want you to create your own lines of symmetry today. you can use things around the house or outside, below are some pictures to give you ideas.
