Week Beginning 10th December 

WOWWWWWWWWWWWWW what a festive and fun week we've had! Christmas jumper day, Christmas dinner, watching KS1 and KS2 play performances, along with our Nativity dress rehearsal and the real performances. We are very proud of the children for being so brave to stand on the stage and speak and sing in front so many parents. We have had festive finger gym activities, RE work on the nativity story and trying really hard in our literacy work during such a busy and exciting time! 

Week Beginning 3rd December 

Here are some of the things we've been doing this week

  • We have had a very festive week after seeing Santa on the ratty on Monday. We had a fantastic day day out, the children were soooooooooo excited and behaved excellently. (photos under trips)
  • We have been practicing our adding skills with our maths mastery partners and also used  the adding machine to add groups of penguins together. (individual photos on children's learningbook) 
  • we learnt all about the Jewish celebration Hanukkah, making Menorahs and tasting jelly doughnuts. 
  • All children did a write up of the school trip in their literacy books, we were VERY IMPRESSED with their developing writing skill.
  • On Friday morning we learnt all about the importance of advent, we made advent crowns and we now know we are preparing for Jesus' birthday.

Week Beginning 26th November

 Here are some of the things we've been doing this week

  • On Monday Harriet from Phunky Foods came in to show us a food demo, we all got to make 'Fruity Crunch'. She taught us about having a healthy plate of food at meal times and that we need to be eating 5 pieces of fruit and veg a day.
  • We have been making different variations of 'Fruity Crunch' all week.
  • Nativity practice is in full swing and we are all doing fabulous at singing the songs.
  • We have also been to some carol practice sessions to learn some hymns that we can sing to worship God.
  • We have been working on our one less skills in maths and working as Team Ants to help each other in our Maths Mastery sessions.
  • RE this week focused on celebrating birthday's, with Jesus' birthday coming up. We wrote about how we feel when it is our birthday. It was Everywhere Bear's birthday on Friday so this week we have been making birthday cards, invitations and decorations and finished off with a little party for him.

Week Beginning 19th November

 Here are some of the things we've been doing this week

  • We have been learning all about Baptism this week, we visited church and had a pretend Baptism for baby Samuel (class doll) at the font. We set up a font in our deconstructed role play and acted out Baptisms.
  • We have had a fantastic POLISH WEEK, Helena has taught us to count and say some words in Polish, Mrs Patrick was definitely the worst at remembering them!! We tried different polish food for our snack and made a polish pudding and tried beetroot soup with our story time on Friday afternoon.
  • We have been looking at one more in maths and practicing these skills in our play both inside and outside.
  • Phonics is going well and everyone is trying really hard to recognise and say all the letters that their groups are learning. 
  • Nativity practice is well under way and our singing skills are FABULOUS!
  • On Tuesday we had a healthy living assembly by a local nurse and when we got back to class we had a yoga session from Cosmic Kids. The children really enjoyed it!  We try to do yoga and meditation regularly as it's important in our busy lives to have some calm time to reflect and take a moment to relax.  

Week Beginning 12th November

 Here are some of the things we've been doing this week

  • We've learnt about how to be safe on our ipads and tablets as part of Anti-Bullying week. Smartie the penguin taught us some good tips to be safe:  Always tell/ask an adult about anything we don't understand that might pop up on our screens and never talk to anyone on the internet that we don't know.
  • We have investigated money, how we use it and the value of 1 and 2 pence's.
  • We have gone magnetic mad, testing to see what objects are and aren't magnetic.
  • We have learnt about John the Baptist in preparation for learning and exploring Baptism next week.
  • We have worked hard to keep our snack area tidy and enjoyed different flavour yogurts and made some Children in Need themed biscuits..
  • We have started learning our Nativity songs …….. yes you read that correctly, NATIVITY SONGS already! You are all in store for a fantastic performance.  


Week Beginning 5th November  

Here are some of the things we've been doing this week

  • We've had a jam packed week looking at 3 different celebrations - Remembrance Day, Bonfire Night and Diwali.
  • We have learnt why Remembrance Day is so important to us and we are very thankful to all the men and woman who fought for us. We made poppies and had a Remembrance assembly in the school 
  • Following on from our talk by our Mini Police, we watched a fire safety video from Fireman Sam and wrote down ways we can be safe around fireworks.
  • We learnt about Hinduism and their celebration of light known as Diwali, me made diva lamps, Rangoli patterns, learnt the story of Ram and Sita and had our own Diwali celebration. 
  • We've had lots of fun identifying 2Dshapes inside and outside the classroom.
  • We continued to be confident using the microwave to warn up beans from snack, along with decorating biscuits into poppies for our Friday treat.
  • The toilet tubes started off being turned into firework rockets but soon turned into anything from binoculars to phones. 
  • Finger gym this week focussed on colouring in skills.

Week Beginning 29th October 

Here are some of the things we've been doing this week

  • It was everything HALLOWEEN in class this week!
  • We made Halloween potions and cocktails in the mud kitchen.
  • Painted Halloween pictures.
  • Investigated pumpkins and used them for our maths activity.
  • We planted daffodils in last years old wellies.
  • Enjoyed eating 'Vampire Blood and Ghost Wee Sandwiches' (jam and butter)
  • We enjoyed our first Mass at church to celebrate All Saints Day and we behaved EXTREMELY well!
  • We worked well in our maths mastery sessions, recognising numbers from 0-20.
  • We investigated and tried to understand how to 'wonder' about things and we asked questions that we wondered about Jesus.
  • We designed a monster after reading 10 Little Monsters and designed a monster cake and wrote an ingredients list after reading Monster Cake.
  • We thought about how to be saintly and think of others so we gave our old pumpkins to the wildlife out in the woods behind school.


Week Beginning 15th October 

Here are some of the things we've been doing this week:

  • We have been looking closely at where we live. We went for a walk around Cleator Moor to see what our town is made up of, mostly houses, buildings and some greenery. We looked at the globe to find the UK, then located Cumbria and Cleator Moor.
  • We read the story of Handa's Surprise, which is a story about a girl who lived in Kenya. We compared her town to ours and found lots of differences, but some similarities too!
  • In the story of Handa's surprise she carried a basket of fruit to give to her friend, so we had a tasting session of these fruits, along with some others. We discussed how important it is to eat healthy food like fruit on a daily basis. We tried bananas, passion fruit, guava, mango, pineapple, orange, tangerine, watermelon and kiwi fruit. 
  • We've enjoyed having cereal for snack, measuring out the milk and using the cereal dispenser independently. 
  • In PE we have been practising our travelling and space awareness skills through fun games.
  • We have been working hard on number recognition and played a fun hide and seek number game in Maths Mastery. 


Week Beginning 8th October

Here are some of the things we've been doing this week:

  • Creating own own stories on story maps, thinking about the characters, the setting, problems and solutions.
  • We have been learning about healthy and unhealthy food, making our own veg soup and sensibly using the microwave to warm it up for snack everyday.
  • Some of the children wanted to go for a nature walk to collect leaves to investigate. We made leaf rubbings and will continue to use them next week.
  • We enjoyed an afternoon of mindfulness activities to understand about mental health and how we need to take time out to relax our minds and bodies when we can. We made eye masks and had a yoga session in the hall, which was lots of fun!
  • We've been working hard in our math sessions ordering numbers.

Week Beginning 1st October

Here are some of the things we've been doing this week:

  • We learnt the story of 'The Little Red Hen'. We thought of actions to go with some of the main words to help us remember and tell the story. Watch out for the video coming soon.
  • We made popcorn and added our own toppings.
  • Daily reading in small groups.
  • 3 sessions of finger gym.
  • Counting things that can't be moved, so we went on a walk around Cleator Moor to count houses, cars, trees, lampposts, drains and signs.
  • Practising rhyming and hearing syllables in words during our 'flying with phonics' sessions.
  • Learning how to be clean and hygienic, we drew funny germs and discussed how to get rid of them. 
  • We looked at and explored conkers, also using them to count.
  • We used screwdrivers to take apart electric mixers.
  • Made volcanoes in the Deconstructed Role Play (child led)



Week Beginning 24th September

This week we started finger gym to strengthen our hands and fingers for writing and drawing. We got (slightly) better at putting on our outdoor suits and wellies. 'Flight School Training' has begun and we are training our ears to listens for sounds around us ready to be a pilot for 'Flying with Phonics'.  We watched a puppet show on 'How to be Kind' . We worked with Year Two and the Bupa nurses to learn about how to be healthy and look after our teeth.
